Organised by the CRP Henri Tudor, this two day workshop will introduce you to this new and more effective way of thinking about managing production in design and construction — "lean construction". Through experience on a number of project simulations we will help you:
- grasp a number of principles that underpin the new thinking and
- think about how they can help you to improve the reliability and quality of your projects in both design and construction.
You will leave the workshop with a small number of tools that you can use immediately to reduce waste and make your projects more reliable + an idea of what is possible if you make the decision to undertake a lean transformation of your project or organisation with a view to creating safer, greener, faster, better quality and lower cost construction — and what to do make progress.
We will discuss: Project management, construction management, Lean thinking, project optimization, delivering value, safer, greener, faster, better quality and lower cost construction, schedule reliability, construction logistics, Just In Time (JIT), Supply Chain Management (SCM) — all from a lean perspective.
The workshop is designed for • Building owners • Civil, structural & services engineers • Project supervisors • Architects and other designers • Project Managers • Constructors, their Trade partners and specialist contractors — all have a role in making construction leaner.
Language English with a minimum of French translation
Goals
- reliable realization of your design & construction projects
- safer, greener, faster, better quality and lower cost construction
Lean has been used in many industries for years and is now applied successfully in construction in countries around the world. Because almost everyone and everything is affected by the cost of construction projects, becoming lean should be of great benefit to the construction industry and its customers
Introduction to lean construction
Lean construction is a philosophy that requires a new way of thinking and a new culture in design and construction. In this workshop we will introduce the key underlying principles and discuss the likely benefits if you decide to transform your organization and what it will take to begin the process.
This part of the workshop will include:
- project simulation so that you can get hands on experience of key lean principles
- three key differences between lean construction and historic construction
- project simulation to underline important points about collaboration
- three key benefits that are enabled by lean construction
- how to get started
The Last Planner System
Developed by The Lean Construction Institute, the Last Planner System is designed to produce more reliable project delivery. In addition, in Denmark it produced much safer sites - 67% safer -, in UK and elsewhere it produced much shorter production schedules - 20% shorter is common - and helps projects running late catch up lost time. It works in building construction, civil engineering and engineering construction projects.
This part of the workshop will include:
- Project simulation to illustrate the effects of production variation and its effect on productivity
- review the key elements of the Last Planner System
- discuss ways to learn how to use the System to create reliable production in both design and on-site construction.
Methods
Action learning • Presentations of theory and practice • Plenary and small group discussions • Brief videos
