Conversations with lean constructors™

USA Lean Construction Study Tour 2010

Following on from the success of the first Tour to Northern California, this Lean Construction Institute UK study tour will be limited to 10 individuals and will visit designers and constructors 11-15 & 18 October 2010, preceding the 12th LCI Congress 19-22 October 2010.  (venue for the congress have yet to be agreed.)

The initial plan is for the tour to visit three cities (Cincinnati, St Louis and Dallas) before ending in (Denver/Boulder).  Starting in Cincinnati may enable us to visit Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky plant about 90 minutes south.

Like the first tour, the emphasis will be on meeting senior managers involved in design and construction to talk about how they are setting about transforming their processes, projects and organisations.  The pay-off for them is that we help them reflect on their own practice — it is part of their continual improvement process.  The pay-off for us is ...

The purpose of the tour is to:

  1. meet with owners/clients, designers, constructors and their trade partners,

  2. discuss their lean project and enterprise transformation process and how it is changing their design, construction and civils work,

  3. explore the relationship between lean and green,

  4. visit a range of projects at different stages of design and construction.

Because we will be using internal flights joining the tour after 1 August 2010 may not allow you to complete the full itinerary with the group.

Participants: Although the tour is aimed at people from the UK, participants from elsewhere are welcome. The tour language is English and there will be no provision for translation.  Participants from US constructors and designers may not be welcome at some venues for reasons of commercial confidentiality.  Please talk to Alan if you are not certain.

Leader: Alan Mossman

Costs: Participants will be responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the USA – British Airways does open-jaw return flights – and for their own hotel and restaurant bills.  In addition to the cost of internal flights (charged at cost), there will be a charge of £750 (UKP) per participant payable in advance to cover local transport, other than public transport, required for the tour and Alan Mossman’s costs as tour leader.  Any surplus will go to the Lean Construction Institute UK.

Optional extension: stay on in ??? and join in the 12th LCI Congress.  To get a flavour of what’s in store you can read Alan Mossman’s notes from the 2009 Congress here.
