Games & simulations

We use a number of games and simulations to develop understanding of and skills in lean and systems thinking and lean construction including the following:

Airplane Game – a production simulation that gives experience of both historic and lean approaches to manufacturing production. Even though this is a manufacturing example it is a quick and easy way for construction and service people to develop an appreciation of key lean principles of value stream, flow, pull and pursue perfectiontakes about 2 hours incl review; requires significant investment in Lego.

Dice Game/The Fit-out Game/The Road-building Game/The Parade of Trades – these are all variations of the same simulation which illustrates the importance of reliable production in construction & design, level loading as well as the influence of batching and the system on results.  takes around 60 mins incl review.

Experiment on red beads – A brilliant way to demonstrate the effect of the system on what people are able to deliver in practice.  takes about 90 mins incl review.

Funnel Project – another manufacturing production simulation that gives experience of both historic and lean approaches to manufacturing production. Like the Airplane Game, this is a quick and easy way for construction and service people to develop an appreciation of the key lean principles - value, value stream, flow, pull and pursue perfectiontakes about 2 hours incl review.

Magic Stick – an illustration of the importance of collaboration, leadership and communication.  takes about 45 mins incl review.

Map Game/Build as many roads as you can – a simple but powerful paper and pencil based group project that explores competition, collaboration and group behaviour, all issues at the heart of any lean transformation at both enterprise and project level.  takes about 2 hours incl review.

Numbers Racket – a simple paper and pencil simulation to show the impact of multi-tasking on productivity.  takes about 15 mins incl review.

Silent Squares – a project that explores real and imagined boundaries, collaboration and illustrates some of the issues associated with thinking of projects as collective enterprises - a great simulation of the way a lot of work can get done collaboratively in construction and design.  takes 45-60 mins incl review.

Speed Splasher: an interactive, team-based target costing exercise
